About Us

.
Our Stree Shakti program serves as an income generating opportunity for underprivileged women in the rural Indian community of Purkal. The program aims to empower women to become income earners in their family by providing them with the resources and training for producing and selling handicrafts. With design and market assistance from our staff, the women stitch quilts, cushion covers, handbags, placemat sets and a variety of beautifully handmade products, which are sold throughout the local community and abroad.  The women receive the full benefits of their labor and are able to produce a sustainable income to ensure proper education, health and hygiene for their family and children.
.
Stree Shakti began as a division of The Purkal Youth Development Society, a community development and education program. The Society is registered with the Registrar of Societies, Uttaranchal (Reg. No. 401/2003-2004). The Government has also exempted us from Income tax under Sections 12 (AA), Section 80(g) and under Section 35AC of the Income Tax Act. The Society is also registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 1976. Other Certificates relating to the approvals obtained by the Society are attached as Annexure 1(A), Annexure 1(E) and Annexure 1(F)We work in a rural village outside of Dehradun called Purkal, located in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountain range in Northern India. Fifteen more villages of similar socio-economic background surround Purkal and we seek to serve these as well. The total population of the area that we serve is estimated at 5,000. PYDS has been working with both youth and women from the local community under our Yuva Shakti and Stree Shakti programmes. Originally the focus was on education of disadvantaged youth, but we increasingly understood that we needed a broader vision. Consequently we have included work with women, and in community development as a whole. The Society was set up by Mr GK Swamy and his wife Chinni. Mr Swamy is the Secretary of PYDS. Information about our Yuva Shakti Programme is available from our web site: www.purkal.org
