Growth and Development

Over the next five years, Stree Shakti grew exponentially in both program participants and demand for quilted products. After the first Stree Shakti quilt exhibition in Gurgaon, in October 2007, Stree Shakti began to diversify their products and produce handbags, toilet bags, cushion covers, placemat sets and various other home and fashion accessories

Early in 2008, more than 50 women were participating in the women empowerment, skill-training program. The growth and demand for more space to house the women and their work brought the construction of a new Stree Shakti building.  The new a new Stree Shakti building, adjacent to the Yuva Shakti Learning Centre, would be able to house over 100 women and their work.

“I had quilting and hand- embroidery skills prior to joining Stree Shakti, but I had no way of generating an income with them. Stree Shakti helped me further develop my skills and turn them into a way to support my children’s health and education.”
